Glass popsicles, metal bread, bacteria berries, and more:
This World Food Day, it's hard to ignore that our food system is broken.
Glass in the popsicles. Metal in the sourdough. Ink in the tofu. Cyclospora in the lettuce. E. Coli in the berries. Salmonella in mangoes, granola, radishes, alfalfa sprouts, jalapeños, and more. It's almost as if cutting staff and funding for the agencies that inspect food and track foodborne illnesses comes at a human cost.
Meanwhile, Americans are going hungry because of Trump's cuts to SNAP, rising food prices, and his refusal to address the hunger crisis. And more are suffering at their own dinner tables thanks to the science-denying buffoon he put in charge of our food and health systems.
The MAGA contingent knows this. They simply don't care.
When Republicans passed the so-called "Big Beautiful Bill," they cut nearly $200 billion from SNAP, the nation's most effective weapon against hunger, to help pay for tax cuts for the ultra-rich who've never wondered how they'd fill the fridge.
And they timed the biggest cuts to hit after Election Day. Medicaid work requirements begin in January 2027, and the biggest state cost-share for SNAP arrives later in 2027. They hoped you wouldn't feel it until after the midterms.
Food banks are already feeling it. Seniors are stretching leftovers the last week of the month. Parents are working multiple jobs and still coming up short. Veterans now face a new law that makes their lives harder.
We cannot food-drive our way out of this policy choice. That's why I'm fighting to restore and protect SNAP, WIC, and free school lunches, and all of our critical food programs. Can I count on you to donate what you're able to keep me in this fight?
Hunger in the richest nation in history is a political choice, and together, we can choose differently.
Yours in the fight,
Jim
