The humanitarian crisis nobody is talking enough about
Cancer used to be a 100% death sentence, until science intervened. Cancer is still scary, but now there's more hope.
Except if you live in Gaza.
Last week, I pressed the Trump Administration to force Israel to reestablish a medical corridor so that Palestinian cancer patients in Gaza could receive potentially life-saving treatment in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.
I have repeatedly sought to withhold offensive arms transfers to Israel until they open humanitarian channels because this is more than just a war; it's a humanitarian and human rights crisis now.
Here's what I, and 56 other Democrats, are demanding from the Trump Administration:
- Engagement with the governments of Qatar, Egypt, and Türkiye in a coordinated diplomatic effort to secure medical evacuations for pediatric cancer patients and their caregivers from Gaza to appropriate medical facilities in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.
- Facilitate the reestablishment of the medical corridor between Gaza and East Jerusalem and the West Bank for every patient who needs medical evacuation.
- Obtain assurances from the Israeli government that evacuated patients and caregivers will be allowed to return to Gaza once they are able.
- Ensure that Palestinians can rebuild and protect hospitals and medical infrastructure in Gaza.
Nobody — especially no child — should have to go through the stress and physical toll of cancer treatment while living with the stress of a warzone.
I'll keep working until these kids fighting so bravely have the healthcare support they need to beat cancer.
Jim
