If they wanted to, they could

Republicans have full control over the government. If they wanted to fund the government, they could. If they wanted to fully fund Medicaid, protect Social Security, and keep health care more affordable for millions of Americans, they could do all of those things because, once again, they have complete control over our government.

But they haven’t lifted a finger.

In fact, they’re actively working to halt negotiations. The President canceled his meeting with Democratic leaders, where they were supposed to discuss a path forward. Republicans won’t even come to the table, but they expect us to believe that they are working hard to keep the lights on?

Gimme a break.

We’re at a critical moment in our country’s history. We need leaders who, at a minimum, show up to work. Let's take back the House in 2026 and get our government focused on serving people who work hard every day and expect their government to work hard on their behalf.

For the last 9 months, Trump and Republicans have used every tool at their disposal to try and take away services, cut funding for programs, and now, they’ve reached their grand finale: shutting down the government.

That’s right, at midnight tonight, our country runs out of money, and our government shuts down unless they find their spines. They have all the power; they can keep the government open and running functionally if they want to.

We’ll see how it goes, and if they fail, we’ll be in touch soon.

In solidarity,

Jim McGovern
