The slow threat facing our country
We often think of the most dangerous things as the ones which move fastest, or look the strongest. But the ones that move quietly, in the background, do real damage too. It's like that old story, the tortoise and the hare. Only the tortoise wants to attack our fundamental rights and destroy our democracy.
The slow-moving threat facing our country today is the erosion of independence in our government.
It can look like the removal of long-time officials from their posts, threats as an attempt to exert influence over independent agencies, and trumped-up charges against anyone who stands in the way of their agenda.
I'm frightened by how familiar that all sounds. If you are too, chip in to my campaign ahead of our end-of-quarter fundraising deadline so we can fight back to protect our democracy.
The Trump administration has ramped up their attempts to eliminate dissent and grab onto even more unchecked power. They've fired career civil servants across numerous agencies, wielded the power of the office to silence a comedian, and imposed new restrictions on the reporting of credentialed, trusted reporters.
Now, they're trying to use the long arm of the law to silence the President's critics.
Just this week, he appointed his personal attorney, Lindsey Halligan, as a U.S. Attorney with the explicit goal of indicting New York Attorney General Letitia James (who prosecuted a fraud case against him) and former FBI Director James Comey.
Using the powers of the office and the structures of government itself to silence your critics is so far beyond the pale that any halfway-honest person would condemn it. But there's no place for honesty in the ranks of Donald Trump's GOP. Donate to our campaign ahead of our end-of-quarter fundraising deadline to help Democrats flip the House and bring accountability back to the halls of Congress.
More soon,
Jim McGovern
