Another week gone, still no funding

It’s the end of the week. We’re fast approaching the deadline to pass a budget and keep the government open.

But the White House and Congressional Republicans are just now coming to the table.

What do they want? To kick the can down the road again until November 21. The House passed this (barely), now we’ll see what the Senate does.

Regardless of what happens in the Senate, we shouldn’t forget that instead of doing their jobs, Republicans have spent the last 9 months chasing their tails, cutting funding for programs that millions of people across the country rely on, and figuring out exactly how big a tax cut they can get away with giving to their billionaire buddies.

Americans need a Congress that thinks about getting Social Security checks to people, about getting people affordable health care, and about making sure people who need help with affordable housing are able to get the support they need to help keep a roof over their heads.

And they’re not getting that with these jokers in charge.

For the last 9 months, Speaker Johnson and Republican leaders have made no attempt to negotiate a budget. Now that they’re backed into a corner, they want the American people to accept even more disastrous policies for the sake of keeping the government open.

And they want to blame Democrats for all this.

Democrats are not going to lie down while Republicans gut every program providing a lifeline to struggling Americans. We have 11 days to go until a Republican shutdown. They have full control over the House, Senate, and White House. If they can’t keep the government open and fully funded, it’s on them.

More soon,

Jim McGovern
