Turning the constitution into confetti
This administration has shown the least regard for the Constitution, and the values our country was founded on.
It’s like they look at the highest law in the land and think “Oh, that old thing?”
Today, on Constitution Day, I thought it would be a good time to revisit just some of this administration’s most unconstitutional acts throughout their short time in office:
- Accepted a $400 million Boeing 747 as a “gift” from the Qatari royal family, violating the Emoluments clause
- Issued an executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship, in very clear violation of the plain text of the 14th Amendment
- Impounded billions of dollars of congressionally-appropriated funds for various federal agencies and programs
- Unilaterally shut down USAID and fired its employees, violating the separation of powers
- Deployed the National Guard, Army, and Marines to Los Angeles, Chicago, and DC
- Unilaterally implemented sweeping tariffs on our largest trading partners
- Ordered the Commerce Department to begin work on a mid-decade census, despite the Constitution’s explicit statement that it should be done in 10-year cycles.
- Conducted military strikes in Iran and on a vessel in the Caribbean without Congressional approval
It’s telling that after each and every one of these blatantly unconstitutional acts, we heard deafening silence from Congressional Republicans. They’ve shown us over and over again that they would rather sit idly by while Trump turns the Constitution into confetti for his birthday parade.
If the GOP won’t stand up for our Constitution, it’s up to us to elect leaders who will.
More soon,
Jim McGovern
