A rallying cry for our times

On this day in 2022, then Prince Charles acceded to the throne and became the King of England.

While I respect the historical significance, I just couldn't bring myself to get invested in the event like so many others around the world did.

I think it might have something to do with the proud commonwealth I've called my home for my entire life: Massachusetts.

249 years ago, we made a decision to stand up to a King, one who sat on the same throne that King Charles III occupies now. We rejected outright the idea that one person has the authority to rule over his fellow human beings on account of his birth, and in the process, created one of the world's first constitutional republics.

Now, as we struggle against a President who believes himself to be above the law, who uses the office to enrich himself, and who spends every day attacking the constitutional foundations of our democracy, we've found ourselves returning to our roots with a rallying cry for our times:

No Kings. Not now, not ever.

In my mind, America is and will always be a nation where the will of The People carries weight. But, as Benjamin Franklin once said, we have "A republic, if you can keep it."

Our democracy, the grand experiment this country was founded upon, is under attack from a President who wishes to be a King and a GOP majority that is content to let him be one. It's up to all of us to heed the words of our founding fathers and fight to keep our republic. Will you donate to my campaign to help us throw out the enablers and take back the House majority?

More soon,

Jim McGovern
