While they hide, we hurt.

It's commonly thought that ostriches stick their heads in the sand at the slightest sign of danger.

While this isn't actually true of our long-necked friends, it is true of one group: Donald Trump and his GOP enablers.

Ostrich sticking its head in the sand.

A few weeks ago, Trump's EPA made an astounding declaration that greenhouse gas emissions pose no threat to human beings or the climate, despite decades of scientific consensus saying otherwise. The move is intended to weaken the legal basis for all regulations aimed at protecting our environment and slowing the course of climate change.

The irrefutable evidence for the impact of greenhouse gas emissions on our climate poses a real danger to the GOP. After all, if they acknowledge this truth, it becomes really hard for them to take in their millions of dollars in campaign contributions from the oil, gas, and coal industries.

In the face of danger, Republicans have stuck their heads in the sand.

Here's the thing: problems don't just disappear when you ignore them. While Republicans pretend climate change isn't real, Americans are feeling and seeing the impacts. What used to be once-in-a-lifetime storms now ravage cities and towns multiple times a year, temperatures reach record highs, and water shortages lead to droughts and wildfires.

We deserve leaders who will address our problems head-on, instead of cowering to protect their careers and the status quo. It's clear that Republicans quite simply aren't up to the task.

Yours in the fight,

Jim McGovern
