They’re popping bottles, we’re pinching pennies
Last week, President Trump signed his Big Ugly Bill, a buffet of tax cuts and giveaways to the wealthiest people in America. Once again, Trump and Congressional Republicans have shown their outright disdain towards the working people in this country.
You hear that? That's the sound of champagne popping in penthouses across the country.
But there is no buffet, single meal, or even a snack for the millions of hardworking Americans who this bill hurts most. In addition to the tax cuts, the budget bill makes massive changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), withdrawing federal funding for the program and moving the responsibility to the state. These irresponsible cuts will lead to an increase in hunger across the country and put a greater burden on local organizations, which are already struggling to meet demand.
Right here in Massachusetts, food banks are already sounding the alarm about this bill's impact.

Over 18 million households in America are "uncertain of having or unable to acquire enough food to meet the needs of all their members," according to Trump's own USDA. It is unconscionable for the federal government to withdraw support for SNAP when families are already finding it difficult to put food on the table.
I've spent my career in Congress fighting to ensure that no one goes hungry in America, and this budget unravels much of the hard-won gains we've made. Republicans keep showing us that they are unwilling or unable to put the needs of this country ahead of their desire to win re-election. I guess we can make that choice for them. Chip in $17 today and support our efforts to take back the House.
More soon,
Jim McGovern
