They’re Coming for SNAP—and 41 Million Americans Will Pay the Price

The GOP budget-reconciliation bill is a travesty – a 1,100-page list of ways the GOP can use our government to beat up on working people. And they are trying to push it through in the middle of the night, but I'm going to continue to shine a light on it.

So far, most of the conversation has centered on the House GOP stripping health care from millions of Americans by gutting Medicaid. But there's another quiet heist happening right under our noses – and it's just as vicious: Buried deeper in the bill is a brutal attack on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which helps 41 million Americans put food on the table.

Let's put a finer point on it: the average SNAP benefit is about $2 per person per meal. The House GOP is (enthusiastically) trying to take that money away from 41 million working moms, seniors, kids, low-wage workers, and people with disabilities and giving it to billionaires, because apparently, the only thing more offensive to them than a billionaire paying taxes is a child eating lunch.

Do you think Elon Musk needs another tax break? I don't.

As always, this isn't about "waste, fraud, and abuse" or fiscal responsibility or deficits or whatever phony excuse they've created today.

The GOP budget is about cruelty and greed – a punishment for being poor or a reward for being rich. This isn't just abstract policy. There are lives at stake – millions of them. Mike Johnson may have lost sight of that, but I haven't. I never will. And I'll never back down from this fight.

More soon,

Jim
