Enough is enough: it's time to reinstate the assault weapons ban
We've had more mass shootings in 2023 than there have been days in the year so far. It's a horrifying statistic, but what's even more horrifying is the fact that the Republican party and their NRA buddies continue to turn a blind eye to the gun violence epidemic that's plaguing our country.
Instead of actually doing something to prevent these horrific tragedies from happening, they'd rather offer up empty "thoughts and prayers." Well, I'm sorry, but thoughts and prayers aren't going to bring back the innocent lives that have been lost.
We can't afford to wait for them to get their act together. As long as Republicans are in the pocket of the NRA, nothing will change.
That's why we need to reinstate the assault weapons ban that was in place from 1994-2004. It's a no-brainer - when military-style weapons are readily available, it's easier than ever for individuals to carry out mass shootings.
I'm proud to have helped pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act last year. After almost thirty years of inaction, we finally passed substantive gun violence prevention legislation. But let's face it; it's not enough.
We need to do more to prevent mass shootings and protect our communities.
The Republican party loves to make gun violence into some kind of political issue rather than acknowledging it as the public health crisis that it is. But the truth is that the majority of Americans - regardless of political affiliation - are in favor of commonsense measures to prevent gun violence.
Together, we can end this epidemic of gun violence - but it's going to take more than just empty words and hollow promises. So let's roll up our sleeves and get to work, because enough is enough.
