When ignorance meets cruelty
Republicans seem to get a kick out of causing harm to those who are most vulnerable – in this case: 9 million hungry children.
I mean, just look at these state Republican leaders across the country who are proudly voting against universal school meals, wearing their ignorance and cruelty right on their sleeves. It's like they're in a competition to see who can be the biggest heartless jerk.
Take Republican state Senator Steve Drazkowski in Minnesota, for example. This guy actually had the audacity to say that he had "yet to meet a person in Minnesota that is hungry." Apparently, hunger is just a "relative term," and he's hungry after only eating a measly cereal bar for breakfast.
1 in 11 children in his own state don't have enough food — but this guy thinks poverty isn't a problem because he doesn't know any poor people. That is sick. Maybe if his party spent less time trying to ban books and more time listening to parents, he'd know how huge a problem hunger is.
We cannot forget about Republican state Senator Mike Wobbema from North Dakota, who callously blamed parents of hungry children for their plight. Because, you know, it's not as if poverty or systemic issues play any role in this at all. Nope, it's just all about those lazy, negligent parents. Give me a break.
Oh, and just to add insult to injury, that same North Dakota state legislature voted to increase their own meal allotments by a whopping 29% the very next week, costing the state another million dollars. Because, hey, who needs to fund school lunches for thousands of hungry children when you can just line your own pockets, right?
Republicans' refusal to fund free school lunches is an absolute disgrace. It just goes to show that they don't give a damn about the well-being of the children in their states and that they're more interested in playing partisan politics than actually helping people.
More soon,
