The insurrectionists are in charge now
In the month since we began this Congress, we have seen an extremist MAGA faction hijack the Republican party.
A faction that is not interested in governing but in their own egos.
A faction that is not interested in compromise but in consolidating power.
A faction that refuses to put people over politics.
Republicans have welcomed election deniers into their ranks with open arms. Now they are reaping what they have sown. The insurrectionists are in charge now.
It reminds me of a famous quote from President John F. Kennedy "Those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside."
The American people rejected extremism in the last two elections. That's why we have President Joe Biden, and that's why the "red wave" turned into a "pink splash." But my Republican colleagues still aren't listening.
Here's what they've done in their first month with their majority:
- Allowed a single member the ability to force a Speaker vote – holding leadership hostage.
- Gutted the House Ethics Committee.
- Shut down investigations into Donald Trump's wrongdoing.
- Voted to make slashing taxes for billionaires and large corporations easier.
- Rejected pandemic safety measures.
- Attacked women's access to abortions.
- Unveiled a plan to make it easier for Big Oil to pollute.
- Worked to shut down House staff unionization.
- Created a subcommittee to push QAnon conspiracies and launch fake investigations into nonexistent scandals.
Their actions disrespect this institution and, more importantly, the people who sent us here to govern.
More soon,
Jim
