Have the weekend off? Thank a union
Happy Labor Day. Today we celebrate the American labor movement.
Unions built America – and not just physically. We can thank unions for many of the workplace protections we take for granted: child labor laws, worker safety rules, the weekend, and the 40-hour work week.
But for the last 40 years, corporate executives have been targeting those advances, scapegoating our unions, and weakening workers' ability to protect themselves.
Now, there is a historic labor revolution sweeping America.
Large corporations are seeing workers vote to unionize and even strike for better working conditions. This movement is powerful; workers are challenging the status quo, from teachers in Columbus, OH, to 200+ Starbucks locations, including in Worcester.
These workers are leading the fight for a more equal America, protecting their rights and demanding a living wage.
For too long, CEOs and shareholders have been comfortable exploiting their workers. Well, no more!
Americans want unions.
U.S. approval of unions is at its highest point since 1965! And this movement is expected to grow; 77% of Americans 18 to 34 approve of unions.
Unions are the backbone of America, and I will continue to do everything I can to support them in the halls of Congress. I'm proud to honor their work today.
Let's create a more equitable America.
