It’s about time
Today, President Biden announced his choice of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to be our nation's newest Supreme Court Justice.
It affirms what I've thought for a long time: It's about time.
The fact that no Black woman has been nominated (or confirmed) to our Supreme Court yet isn't for lack of qualified candidates – it's an artifact of our country's checkered, racial history.
That changes now, with one of the most qualified candidates we've ever seen: She's served as a federal district court judge, a federal appellate judge, and a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission. She was a clerk in Justice Stephen Breyer's chambers. She will be the first justice to have previously been a federal public defender.
So, let's say it again because it bears repeating:
It's. About. Time.
I'm looking forward to meeting her.
