I can’t say this is okay with me, but I’m not surprised.
I was raised to believe that voting is a right. Each and every American citizen, no matter what they believe, has the right to their individual say in our democracy's future.
The unfortunate truth is that, since Day One, those rights have been denied, weakened, and manipulated to preserve an unjust status quo. Generation after generation has fought to expand those voting rights, and our history books celebrate every hard won inch of progress.
Now, Republican politicians in Washington D.C. and across America are trying to drag us backwards. I won't stand for it, and I know you won't, either.
Donald Trump and his allies are trying to take away democratic rights from as many people who disagree with them as possible.
→ Don't support Trump's narrow-minded, hate-filled worldview? Then maybe you shouldn't be allowed to vote.
→ Are you a woman? Then your say over your own medical and democratic choices counts less than theirs.
→ Are you not white, wealthy, or a patron of Trump's elite establishments? Then you shouldn't expect to have the same rights and privileges as others.
And when we confront them on it, they claim to be victims.
Here's the good news: this summer, House Democrats passed bold legislation to protect the democratic rights and voting access for everyone.
Not one Republican joined us.
I can't say "that's fine with me," because I still can't accept that lawmakers in this democracy wouldn't take every possible step to increase participation in elections. But I can say I'm not surprised, and Republican leadership is making the best case for why we need to get them out of office.
