Obstruction isn’t leading
We might have a new Congress, but we've got the same destructive Republican "leadership".
Democrats won at all levels with a mandate to go big, undoing the Trump era's damage and moving us towards a healthier environment, a recharged economy that works for everyone, and true racial equity. But Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans aren't interested. McConnell will tell his colleagues openly that his only goal is to win back power. That's why he's doing everything possible to hold the American people hostage through the filibuster.
We've seen this dance before:
-
McConnell makes demands that only the special interests and billionaires who fund his (and his friends') campaign could ever want.
-
And then he'll refuse to make even the slightest changes, even the ones that are overwhelmingly favored by the public.
-
Then he'll run to right-wing media and claim his 'good faith' efforts were blocked and start name-calling.
I've done that dance too many times and with too many of Senator McConnell's colleagues in the House. And I am done with it.
We don't have time to waste if we're going to end child hunger, rein in mass shootings, and protect and strengthen health care for all.
Obstruction isn't leading, and the filibuster isn't some founding principle to worship—it's a Jim Crow relic that has reared its ugly head every time we try to take a bold step closer to upholding our ideals for all.
The filibuster is, in short, a tool for holding our democracy hostage. I'm standing alongside Congresswoman Cori Bush and dozens of my colleagues as we call for an end to the filibuster as we know it.
It's time we finally take action on the biggest problems facing our nation, free from McConnell's threats and obstruction.
