Doing things a little differently

Donald Trump doesn't think the rules apply to him, that he can run our country like he runs his businesses: for a quick buck, then into the ground.

That's why, as chair of the House Rules Committee, my plan from the start was to do things a little differently in Congress.

Constitution Day is a good reminder of that. Because, whereas Donald Trump is trampling all over the Constitution, House Democrats are doing our best to fix what he and his Republican allies are breaking.

Our agenda has been straightforward but critical:

  • Restore the people's voice by reforming our outdated and woefully-inadequate election systems and security.
  • Return Congress to regular order, back before the time Republicans rammed partisan legislation through without so much as allowing us to read the bills they were demanding votes on.
  • Bring greater inclusion and diversity to decision-making in Congress and our country. Although Trump thinks his white supremacist friends are fine people, the truth is that America does its best with diverse leadership.
  • Protect the Affordable Care Act, fight the climate crisis, and bring our overall agenda in line with the actual will of the American people.

Today on Constitution Day, and every day, it's my honor to serve you in Congress and to move our Democratic agenda forward.

That's what 2020 is all about. Donald Trump and Republicans want to take us back in so many ways. It's our duty to keep progress pointed firmly forward.
