the health of our military members is not "too expensive"
In Congress, I am a member of a committee on perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), called the PFAS Task Force.
PFAS are toxic chemicals known to cause horrifying health problems ranging from birth defects to advanced-stage cancers, to thyroid disorders. Most Americans are exposed to PFAS in small quantities from everyday household items like nonstick pans and dental floss.
Recently, we learned that many Americans have unknowingly been drinking water heavily contaminated with PFAS. Because PFAS are found in high concentrations in the firefighting foam used by the military to battle jet-fuel fires, families on military bases are at especially high risk.
This is unacceptable. Despite their knowledge of the health problems associated with PFAS, EPA officials have argued that bringing water systems to healthy levels would be too expensive.
More soon,
Jim
